How Soon After Month-End Will I Get My Financials?

The Short Version:
If you're on our Core package, your books are closed and your statements are in your hands between the 20th and the 25th of the following month. On Advanced or Ultimate, it's usually the 15th to the 20th. You don't have to ask for them. You also don't have to wait for the close to see where you stand, because most of our clients can pull up their numbers any day of the month in Thrive. A close takes as long as it does because we're waiting on information to arrive, not on accounting work to get done.
A multi-location owner asked his accounting team a question this summer that I think about a lot: When do you think I’ll have a set of financials, just so I can let the bank know, because we’re trying to get a line of credit established and they’re waiting on the most current numbers.
His financing was sitting still because a set of statements wasn’t done yet.
By the way, I don’t know anyone who asks for financials out of curiosity. There’s a banker, a landlord, a partner, or a tax deadline on the other end of that question, and "We’ll get them to you soon" isn’t an answer you can forward to a lender. What makes it worse is that a lot of firms won’t put a date in writing, so you’re left guessing whether waiting three weeks is normal or a sign that something has gone wrong with your books.
At Patrick Accounting, we close the books for hundreds of small business owners every month. We'd rather tell you our real number and defend it than give you a vague answer that sounds better.
So here's what we'll cover here: when your financials are ready, what you can see before that date, and what we're doing in the weeks in between.
When Will My Monthly Financials Be Ready?
The date you receive your monthly financials depends on which service package you're on.
-
Core: closed books between the 20th and the 25th of the following month. April's profit and loss, balance sheet, and supporting schedules are in your hands in the back half of May.
-
Advanced and Ultimate: usually, between the 15th and the 20th.
That happens every month. You don't have to ask, and you don't have to remind us, because delivering them is what monthly accounting is.
Can I See Anything Before the Books Are Closed?
Yes, and a lot of owners don't expect this. For most of our clients, the books are live all month. You can look at where you stand any day you want through Thrive. The close date tells you when the month is finalized and reconciled. It isn't the day you're first allowed to see a number.
So, you can see how last month is going while it's still going, any time you want to look. The close is just the point where we'll stand behind the number.
Why Does It Take Weeks to Close My Business Books?
Closing books is a gathering problem before it's an accounting problem. The accounting itself doesn't take weeks; waiting on information does.
Across our client base, we pull roughly 5,000 bank and credit card statements every month. Some of them arrive automatically the moment the month ends. Plenty don’t. Sometimes, there are statements that only exist behind a login nobody’s used since last quarter, vendors that still put things in the mail, and owners who still write checks by hand. So, we're waiting on the bank to post an image before we even know what the check was for.
Until the statements are in, the transactions are reconciled, and the odd missing invoice is resolved, a financial statement would just be a guess dressed up in a PDF. We’d rather give you a right answer on the 22nd than a wrong one on the 5th, because you’re likely to make a decision on it.
Which Clients Get Financial Updates Faster Than Monthly?
Advanced and Ultimate clients run on a weekly rhythm instead of a monthly one. We're in the accounts every week, so your cash position actually means something when you check it mid-month.
This comes down to your package, not your industry. If your business needs weekly visibility, that's a conversation about which package you're on.
What Delays a Month-End Close?
The biggest variable in your close date usually isn't on our side of the desk. It's how fast the missing pieces reach us. Here's what actually pushes a close later:
- Broken connections between your systems and your books. When an EMR or POS feed stops talking to the accounting file, we have to chase the data and rebuild it by hand.
- Information we're still missing. One account we can't see, or one transaction nobody can explain yet, holds the reconciliation open.
- Third-party reports that arrive late. Outside payroll, POS exports, and franchise or royalty statements run on someone else's calendar, not ours.
- AR or AP that isn't wrapped up on your end. If the month is still open in your shop, it can't be finished in ours.
Clients who connect every account, keep their AR and AP current, and answer the month's questions within a couple of days consistently land at the early end of the window.
Can I Get Financials by a Specific Deadline?
Tell us the date and what it's for, and we'll do our best to work the close around it. A loan application, a franchise review, and a partner buyout each need different things emphasized, and knowing which one you're walking into changes what we prioritize.
What we won't do is promise a date we can't control. We can't close a month without all the information. If a statement or a report hasn't reached us, no amount of scheduling will fix that. So, give us the deadline as soon as you know it, tell us what's still outstanding on your side, and we'll get as close as the information allows.
Is Closing My Books Between the 20th and the 25th Good Enough?
It’s a reliable standard, and it’s better than what a lot of owners are living with. It’s also not where we intend to stop.
We're working toward getting you the right data at the time you need it, which is why we built Thrive. A financial statement is one piece of that, and it may not be everything you need in front of you before you make a call. What we're after is accurate financials, ready when you need them, plus the help to actually read them.
We're investing in automating statement collection and transaction coding across every client, specifically to pull these dates forward. When they move, this article moves with them.
We're telling you our current number rather than our target number on purpose. If a firm won't tell you when your financials will arrive, that's the answer you need.
Stop Guessing When Your Business’s Numbers Will Show Up
Now you have real dates to work with: the 20th to the 25th on Core, the 15th to the 20th on Advanced and Ultimate, live numbers in between, and a close we'll work around when you have a deadline.
The problem underneath this question was never really about a date on a calendar. Decisions in your business stop moving when your numbers aren’t ready, and a line of credit, a lease, or a second location can sit still for weeks because a set of statements isn’t finished.
At Patrick Accounting, we work with small business owners who are tired of finding out how last month went in the middle of this one. Publishing our close dates is part of that. Ask every firm you talk to for theirs, in writing, and see who'll give it to you.
If you want to know what your close date would look like with us, book a discovery call and we’ll walk through your accounts, your current state, and what a realistic first close looks like.

Frequently Asked Questions About Monthly Financials for Your Business
Do I get financials every month without asking?
Yes. We email your financials every month with insight you can turn into actions. You're not filing a request and waiting in a queue. On most accounts, you can watch the month come together in Thrive before it's final.
What financials do I actually get?
The standard package is a profit and loss (P&L) for the month against the same month last year, year-to-date against prior year-to-date, and a rolling 12-month trailing P&L by month. With it, you get a comparative balance sheet, standard KPIs, a health score, and trending graphs.
Advanced and Ultimate add customized KPIs built for your business and a cash flow statement.
The full picture of what each tier includes is in our package comparison.
How do the financials reach me?
By email every month, with insight you can turn into actions. Most clients also have live access in Thrive all month. On Ultimate, we go a step further and review the numbers with you live in a monthly meeting, so you're not left reading it on your own and guessing which parts are important.
What if my books are behind right now?
We catch you up before we start a normal monthly rhythm, which means your first close with us takes longer than the ones after it. How that work happens is covered in our guide to cleaning up messy bookkeeping, and what it costs is covered in our explainer on the one-time investment for new clients.
Is faster reporting worth paying for?
That depends entirely on what decisions are waiting on your numbers. If nothing changes based on what the P&L says, speed isn’t worth much. If a hiring decision, a lease, or a loan is sitting still, it’s worth a great deal. We ran the math on that in our piece on the ROI of monthly accounting.
